Interactive Online Interventions

IOI 1: What worries you?       Try this IOI
The design of this IOI is informed by a widely acknowledged and effective intervention highlighted in the research literature. The object of the IOI is to assist students in reframing their concerns as commonplace and surmountable. By fostering collaborative efforts and encouraging the application of productive strategies, the IOI aims to empower students in overcoming these challenges.

IOI 2: Saying is believing       Try this IOI
The goal is to reinforce key messages from Week 1. (1) Student users select at least one testimonial from a curated set of 6 short videos featuring racially diverse upper-class students from various majors, where each articulates the worries they experienced during their transition to college and their initial college physics course. Their stories highlight specific actions taken to address these concerns, accompanied by descriptions of how these actions contributed to a gradual sense of ease over time; (2) users engage in reflection, prompted to consider the testimonial(s) they watched and identify similarities with their own experiences, with reflections typed into a textbox; (3) the narrator discusses the research affirming the importance of processing these reflections for transferability to their own situation, which can be facilitated by the 'write a letter to a future student' activity; (4) users are prompted to reflect on the advice they would offer a future student facing a similar situation, entering it into a textbox as a brief letter; (5) narrator provides encouragement for users to apply the advice they just offered a future student as well as continuing to use strategies identified in the previous IOI.

IOI 3: After 1st Exam - Exam Wrapper       Try this IOI
Exam wrappers, recognized in the literature for supporting inclusive teaching, serve as a pedagogical tool designed to guide students in reflecting on their exam performance, comprehending their mistakes, and formulating strategies for improvement. Koenig and Maries have been using exam wrappers in their teaching each semester since 2019. This approach is particularly beneficial for students who might interpret a "low" score as an indication that they don't belong in the course, major, or college. Exam wrappers provide a structured process for reflection, offering strategies to enhance performance on subsequent exams.

IOI 4: End-of-Course Reflection       Try this IOI
The goal is to help students interpret overall course performance, and support those who may interpret a "low" final grade as meaning they do not belong in the major or in college.
